West Virginia River Gauge Information

Tuesday May 13, 2008

The information provided here is, to the best of our knowledge, accurate. However, even the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) experience problems with river or side stream gauges and/or computer outages or malfunctions. You may want to check the numbers provided here against the United States Geological Services river gauge information Visit USGS site...

River levels may fluctuate greatly depending on local or distant rainfall. The USACE gauge is updated every 2-4 hours. Consequently, the actual levels and gauge readings may not be the same (e.g. - the river may be flowing 10,000 cfs while the gauge still only reads 7,000 cfs because of the 2-4 hour lag time). If you check the gauge and weather daily, you will become familiar with patterns that provide a fairly accurate picture. For example, since the New River flows in a northwesterly direction, if significant amounts of precipitation fall in the watershed areas to the south and east of WV, in time that water will make its way to this area. You can track this by watching the gauges. We encourage you to bookmark this page and become an amateur hydrologist.
