Upper New River

Whitewater Rafting for Families and Kids on West Virginia's Upper New River

Fun and splashy!

Duckying the Upper New River is a perfect choice for an easy introduction to whitewater rafting. Folks ages 6 to 86 will enjoy the gentle rapids and the fun and excitement of playing in the river. Larger rafts are also available for those wanting to take in the scenery and not get too wet above the ankles.

Upper New River rafting is mild white water. This is a great place for a family raft trip, or scouts and youth groups to get their feet wet in the majestic and breathtakingly scenic New River Gorge. The Upper New River has rapids of Class I through III (on a scale of I to VI) which means they're on the mild side—no 14 foot waterfalls or bus-sized waves here—just splashy and playful ripples, with plenty of calm pools in between to gawk at the natural beauty around you or play in the water. Be sure to also check out our Easy-Plan Upper New River Packages, which include lodging and meals!

Choose between our classic Full-Day Upper New River Trip, or if you really want to live the whitewater Huck-Finn lifestyle, join us for a 2 or 3-day river camping adventure. Braving the Upper New ripples each day and camping every night on the river's edge is a journey you and your kids will never forget!

Prices are per person and do not include tax and fees. Prices vary by age, season and day of the week. Youth discounts apply to those 6-12 years old.

"Duckies" are inflatable, one or two-person rafts shaped like kayaks. Our duckies are self-bailing, which means water that splashes in will drain out on its own. They are stable, easy to maneuver and most of all, a blast! You'll get to experience a more personal whitewater rafting challenge and have the experience of a lifetime. Don't want to duckie? Just let your reservationist know. We'll schedule you for a standard raft instead.

What kind of river is the Upper New?
The Upper New River is West Virginia family whitewater at its best! The New River is a large volume river, which makes for huge rapids in the Lower Gorge. But up here, the valley is wide and the water is shallower as flows through long calm pools and easy rapids. Those rapids are formed by gradual gradients over rocky shoals, which create long stretches of fun waves and moving water, without all the huge, dangerous boulders of the Lower New. There’s plenty of floating and swimming to do in between the rapids, along with stops at Jump Rock and a huge gourmet deli-style riverside lunch.

What does Class VI provide?
We provide transportation to and from the river, all rafting equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle & boat), professional guides to get you down the river, a gourmet deli-style lunch and a complimentary beverage after the trip.

How much time do we spend on the water?
The total trip is 5-7 hours from the time you leave base camp until you return. We spend 4-6 of them on the water.

What else might we need?
You should bring any medication you need throughout the day, plus sunscreen, sun glasses and if the weather is a little nippy, a dry layer to put on after the trip. (Your guide will be able to put it into a dry bag.) Our video boaters also accompany most trips and we offer DVDs of your experience for an extra charge. To ensure you get a video, you can pre-order one with your reservation.
