Bridge Day - October 15, 2011
Bridge Day is West Virginia's largest single day festival attracting 200,000 spectators annually. On the third Saturday of October, the New River Gorge Bridge is shut down to vehicular traffic and opened to pedestrians instead! It's a colorful scene of vendors, food, fall foliage, and of course the main attraction.. base jumping!
BASE is a parachuting acronym that stands for bridge, antenna, structure and earth. Bridge Day has become one of the most popular locations for jumpers to get their 'bridge' jump, legally. It is lots of fun watching hundreds of them plummeting off the top of the bridge into a freefall, their colorful chutes filling the sky. Landings are almost as interesting, perhaps more so, as they aim for a postage-stamp-size landing area on the bank surrounded with river, rock and train tracks!
