More About the New River

The New River is a spectacular setting for adventure, filled with natural scenic beauty and abundant wildlife.   It is one of the oldest rivers in the world.  Flowing north from North Carolina into Virginia and West Virginia, it runs counter to the lay of the Appalachian Mountains, and indication that its course was determined be fore the current formation of the landscape as we know it.  In West Virginia, it carved the New River Gorge, a geological feature so stunning and impressive it is known as the Grand Canyon of the East.  So unique is the landscape and the river running through it, the New River has been declared  both a National Scenic River and an American Heritage River.
